Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary

To contemplate, and to give. Thus flows the rhythm of Dominican life, sustained by the overtones of Eternal Love. It is a ceaseless rising and falling – an upward surge toward God, in contemplation; an overflow upon men of the Divine largesse, in action.

A Brief History

The Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary was founded on May 24, 1905, by nuns from the Dominican monastery in Union City, N.J. Over the decades the community flourished in the contemplative Dominican life, with numerous vocations, a Dominican friar chaplain, an active chapter of the Dominican laity, and a strong liturgical life and ministry of intercessory prayer.

In 2020, the community relocated to the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio. After deciding to close in 2022, the remaining nuns transferred to other Dominican monasteries. The Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary received official closure in 2023.

The Monastery Cemetery

As part of the sale of the monastery in Buffalo, the Dominican Nuns of the Perpetual Rosary arranged for the transfer of the remains of 69 sisters who were buried in a cemetery on their former property, with some interments dating back to the early 1900s. The remains were reinterred in a special section of Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cheektowaga designated as Our Lady of the Rosary; the formal blessing and dedication of the sisters’ new resting place took place in August 2021.

The remains of two Dominican friars buried in the cemetery, chaplains to the Nuns, were transferred to the Dominican Friars Section of St. Francis Cemetery, 163 Smithfield Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.
